What Is Mental Health Skill Building?

Individualized counseling and life skills training in the home and community environments to adults 18 or older who have trouble maintaining community stability and independence due to mental illness. Areas of focus includes, daily living skills training, accessing community resources, health and safety, financial management and social supports. 

Admission Criteria

Individuals qualifying for Mental Health Skill-building Services must demonstrate a clinical necessity for service arising from a condition due to mental, behavioral, or emotional illness that results in significant functional impairments in major life activities. Services are provided to individuals who require individualized training to achieve or maintain stability and independence in the community.

Individuals 21 & over shall meet all of the following criteria to receive MHSS & shall have 1 of the following as a primary Axis I DSM diagnosis.

Individuals younger than 21 shall be in an independent living situation or actively transitioning into an independent living situation as well.

1.) Schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder as set out in the DSM,
2.) Major Depressive Disorder-Recurrent;
3.) Bipolar I; of Bipolar II

Individual shall have prior history of any of the following:

hospitalization; residential crisis stabilization, Intensive Community Treatment (ICT) of Program of Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) services; placement in psychiatric residential treatment facility (RTC Level C); or temporary Detention Order (TDO)

Individual shall have had a prescription for anti-psychotic, mood stabilizing, or anti-depressant medications within the past 12 months prior to assessment.

∙ Assist with scheduling and attending all medical/psychiatric appointments
∙ Develop coping skills related to their mental illness, stress, and life difficulties and challenges
∙ Linking Clients to Supportive Community Resources
∙ Health, Safety, and Financial Management Support
∙ Teach housekeeping, laundry, personal hygiene and organizational skills and assist with meal planning, creating a grocery list /budget and grocery shopping, etc.
